In 1913, Jack London was the highest-paid, best-known and most popular writer in the world.

Andrew Sinclair is a novelist, historian, critic and filmmaker. He was a Founding Member of Churchill College, Cambridge, and has taught and travelled across the world. He made the film, now regarded as a classic, of Under Milk Wood. He lives in London and is married to the writer Sonia Melchett.

Fine book. One correction from an academic nephrologist who has published on the subject of London’s kidney disease. His “mysterious malady” during the late phase of the cruise of the Snark was likely due to mercury, not arsenic. London treated his yaws with corrosive sublimate, Mercury bichloride. Open skin lesions of yaws would facilitate systemic absorption of this toxic heavy metal leading to multi system disease including neurological ,renal , dermatological and renal manifestations.Mercury is a known cause of interstitial nephritis, arsenic is not.London’s clinical course in his final days were consistent with the cause of death listed by Dr Potter on his death certificate: chronic interstitial nephritis.
