Summer, 1959. In a small Georgia town, dairy worker Abednego Harris, 19, not only stands out for his skillful handling of bulls, but because of his color. When Lola James, 17, arrives to do day work for a nearby family, Abednego is smitten. As the young couple falls in love, racial tensions heat up, threatening their world. A violent attack tears them apart and spins their lives in different directions. This is their story, and the story of four others whose lives are forever changed by violence. One of them will return to Taylor’s Crossing seeking answers.

I have never given much thought to the question of redemption in literature, but I once heard the author of this book, in a radio interview, state that it ends with a sort of redemption. I believe she is right.

The story is set in North Georgia in 1959, on the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement. It brings to mind ugly truths which are uncomfortable to remember. Our society wants to remember the Reverend, Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and dissident bus rider Rosa Parks, but forget three young girls killed in a church bombing in Birmingham. We cannot forget, because the attitudes which created these events persist into the present day.

The story of Lola and Abednego is compelling because it addresses a struggle which is not yet finished. The violent events of one night changed their young lives forever. These lives continued and in the end found grace. It is a great read.

Return to Taylor’s Crossing

Here is a different take that many of you might not see. I’m lost in the 1960s. My favorite groups from that era are from Motown. If you have ever heard The Supremes sing “Somewhere” you will agree that it fits this story.. As I read “Return to Taylor’s Crossing”, I hummed or softly sang “Somewhere”. Yes, it was difficult to put down! Miss Watt’s use of setting, imagery, and characters are all Top Notch! In the style of William Faulkner and his imaginary county, Yoknapatawpha setting, Miss Watt’s weaves her social inequalities of the United States’ 1950s in her fictional Taylor’s Crossing. From their first encounter, you know “There’s a Place” for Abednego and Lola. Do they find it? You have to read.
From the first chapter, Janie Dempsey Watts creates tension for her characters who are trying to live a quiet life in the farm country of northern Georgia. But 1950's life for black people in the supposedly peaceful town of Taylor's Crossing is anything but. Abednego has to flee for his life, as does his love interest Lola, and they end up far apart. We follow their very different stories throughout decades to the new century. Thoughtfully told, from several different points of view, Watts exposes the scars racism has left on everyone. It is a book that leaves us thinking and wondering and hoping...
I quickly was drawn in by the 1959 world depicted by the author, and by the life of the characters who populate "Taylor's Crossing," a small rural town in North Georgia. As Lola and her farm boy fall in love, they are affected by increasing race-related incidents, as are other residents of the area. This story goes beyond those stressful times, and moves ahead in time to a satisfying ending.
Janie Dempsey Watts looked back on an embarrassing and sad part of American history, especially the horrible things most of us only heard about but never really saw first hand and at the same time prayed it was just a dream. Then she un-raveled the many stories surrounding the subject and pulled them all together to put the reader inside the lives and hearts of all the characters. She did a beautiful job and caught my attention immediately and kept me reading until the very last page. I would recommend this book to both men and women.
The characters of Return to Taylor's Crossing come alive for the reader in this historically correct and entertaining novel. The first two lines of each chapter always had me hooked. It sheds light on the fact that terrible hate crimes cause a ripple effect throughout the future generations of the victims and the perpetrators. Return to Taylor's Crossing is an interesting read which will hopefully encourage its readers to regard each life as sacred.
In full disclosure, I did receive a copy of the book from the author and was asked if I would read it and review it on my blog. After reading a snippet of the book I agreed as the story is right up my alley. I will always be honest in reviewing a book, even if I've received it from the author. With that said, I loved this book. Lola and Abednego's love story is one filled with hatred, tragedy, injustice, living in fear and finding the strength from the depth's of your soul to go on, build a life and find happiness. I couldn't put the book down, but did because I didn't want it to end, yet I wanted to know how their story would end. I believe you will have satisfaction at the end. The book is beautifully written and leads the reader to feel the hurt, love and life in the south.
What happens when two acts of violence impact multiple lives? This is the question posed by author Janie Dempsey Watts in her second novel, Return to Taylor’s Crossing. In this emotionally charged story, which takes place in 1959 and present day rural Georgia, Abednego and Lola are in love. But they soon are separated by racial viciousness at its worse.

I love the way the author examines these horrific events from multiple points of view, specifically three blacks and three whites. I became completely invested in the lives of Abednego and Lola. I particularly enjoyed the story of two little girls, one white, one black, who bond over their love of horses. They too are impacted by the violence in this novel. It was an act of genius by the author to contrast the girls’ innocence with the darker events.

This is a real page turner. I was pulled in immediately by one of the best opening chapters I’ve read in some time. Watts has a great feel for scene, conflict, and tension. She sprinkles in just the right amount of humor. Her characters are believable. The love between Abednego and Lola is compelling, but this is no facile love story. If I have any complaint, the novel was not long enough. I wanted to immerse myself more deeply in the terrifying and absorbing world of Taylor’s Crossing.
