Dr. Jerry Flora opens his heart on the pages of Into Your Hands with transparency and grace. The images are striking the young boy with the melted glasses, the protective father, helpless at the mercy of home invaders, and the prayerful saint, seeking the gifts of peace, joy and wonder. Since his full retirement, Ashland Theological Seminary has missed his gentle spirit and thoughtful approach to spiritual formation. Now, in this book of memoir and witness, we can catch a glimpse of his life in Jesus, a self-described pilgrim journey of following, bonding and likeness.
This book was much-anticipated for me and it certainly did not disappoint. As the title suggests it is the author’s memoirs, intertwined and replete with spiritual truths and nuggets that remain with the reader long after the book has been devoured. I read a chapter a night, before retiring, having inspirational richness to ponder as I fell asleep. I seem to have slept more peacefully while I was reading the book and was sad to see it come to an end. It is the type of book that one can read again and again, however, and makes a great devotional. I was honored to sit in Dr. Flora’s classes years ago. Reading his book introduced me to him as a young theology student, young husband and father, a pastor and finally as he began his teaching career. Throughout the many facets of his life God was real to him and close to him. Reading about the history of his walk with God was encouraging and uplifting. I was especially touched by how God used other individuals to minister to him on his journey, as the book became their story as well as his. I cannot emphasize enough the value of this book to those of you who want to experience a deeper experience with God’s presence in your life. Dr. Flora, I hope you are working on a second volume.
